What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic application of hypnosis which enables a two-way interaction with the subconscious mind, with the goal of making positive life changes. During a fully awake state, our conscious mind serves as a barrier to uncovering deeply ingrained belief systems that operate at a subconscious level. These hidden motivators show up in patterns of behavior that no longer serve us, and by connecting to the root cause (your subconscious), hypnotherapy provides an open door to healing. How does Hypnotherapy compare with Psychotherapy (or other talk therapies)? Many licensed psychotherapists choose to earn their Hypnotherapy certification so that they can use this modality within their practice, along with traditional methods. It's interesting to hear that in some cases, these clients achieve faster results - sometimes in one session - after years of talk therapy not delivering the results they were seeking. Will I be in control during a hypnotherapy session? Yes. You're always in control. Even though you'll be in a deeply relaxed state, you'll remain in control throughout. I'll be checking in with you the whole time to make sure you're fully supported and have what you need for healing. Will I remember what happens? Yes. The optimal trance state is one in which your subconscious or unconscious mind is open and available to you, while your conscious mind is settled and calm. If you go too deep, and reach a somnambulistic state, you may experience forgetfulness but this is not a common occurrence. I'll always give you post-hypnotic suggestions so that you remember all the important insights you discover. What if this brings up some disturbing thoughts and feelings? Growth can be disturbing and uncomfortable, but it's a necessary part of the healing process. It's true that trance sessions can evoke powerful emotions to process (in fact, most therapeutic modalities do). That said, you'll be in a deeply relaxed state where emotional release is often much easier to experience than being awake with your conscious mind fully engaged. Plus, I'll ensure that you are supported and resourced throughout this process. And by the end of our session, I'll verify that you feel grounded and protected, and fully able to continue with your day. How do I know if I can be hypnotized? After experiencing a few stage hypnotists, you may believe that you can't be hypnotized. Don't worry. If you've ever fallen asleep, you can be hypnotized. The relaxed state you experience just before entering a dream state is very similar to the feeling of being in trance. In fact, if you've ever meditated, even once, you already have the skills to give hypnosis, self-hypnosis, and hypnotherapy a whirl. What's the difference between meditation and hypnosis? These are very similar relaxation and healing practices. However, there are subtle differences, particularly when it comes to intention. In general, the intention of meditation is an "emptying of the mind", which first starts with a recognition of thoughts that come and go. And then detaching from those thoughts so you can be free and "empty". The intention with hypnosis and hypnotherapy is more directive and active in nature, with goals of cultivating imagination and increasing self-awareness. Often these sessions involve "journeys of the mind" to explore our emotions, motivations, and belief systems to make positive changes in our lives. These practices are extremely complementary, and can build on each other. How do I know if it's working? You'll know when you have achieved your desired results. As part of the initial consultation, I'll ask you what your desired results are (e.g. improved performance, gaining relationship insights, quitting a bad habit, etc.). I'll also ask what your expectations are overall, as well as for each session. We'll revisit these goals and review these expectations after each session to measure progress, fine-tune our approach, and co-create an action plan and next steps. Many clients achieve desired results after the first or second session. Will I be able to speak during a trance? Yes. In fact, nearly all of our sessions will be interactive. Based on your goals for the session, I'll ask you open-ended questions to deepen your experience as well as help you discover key connections and insights (driven by your own inner wisdom). You truly are in the driver's seat and all of the questions I ask you will be based on where you are, what you're experiencing, and what you tell me you need from moment to moment. What if I fall asleep? I'll be monitoring your state of relaxation every step of the way, and it's not likely that you'll fall asleep. But if you do, not to worry. I'll gently bring you back to wakefulness so we can continue your healing process. What's my Higher Self? Your inner knowing. Your inner wisdom. The part of yourself that knows you better than anyone else. Some may also refer to this as the subconscious or "gut" instinct. Essentially, we tap into this part of yourself when we do energy healing work. It's important that we use the word that has the most meaning for you when accessing this part of your personality, so if Higher Self isn't a term that resonates with you, we'll find another that does. What if I'm an atheist and don't practice religion or believe in God? Whether you believe in God or not is immaterial. The only belief that is essential for energy healing to work is the belief that you have the power to heal yourself. Because you do. As long as you stay tuned to your inner wisdom, you have all you need to heal and transform.
